MLO 2
Major Learning Outcome 2: linguistics
This had to be the most challenging one for me durning my two years at CSUMB. I have always had a difficult time in the linguistic area. I believe that the reason why I have a difficult time is because I don’t think I was taught properly and I did not have anyone to guide me through the correct path growing up. I had always taught myself when it came to reading and writing, it was not until high school that I was able to learn a little more on the subject.
A linguistic course that I took at CSUMB that caught my attention was Span 315 Into to Translation, I thought it was going to be a very easy course since growing up I was always the translator for my parents. I felt that I spoke both languages fluently and believed that it was going to be simple, I was wrong. This course taught me what it takes to be a Spanish translator. During the course we learned techniques to help us translate more efficiently. I learned that translating professionally is not the same as translating for my parents. In the course we learned to translate various texts from a joke to a short story. The professor suggested a great resource that helped a lot throughout the course, Word Reference. Two other course that I have taken that also fit in the MLO 2 were Span 395: Spanish Applied Linguistics and Span 345: Bilingualism in the Spanish World. These two course were just as challenging but very interesting, both courses were amazing with suppling terminology in the reading we read through out the course.
