Span 301 s
The service learning course was part of the Spanish language experience, not only does it provided you with the experience to interact with people from your community, but it also enhances your knowledge with your culture and with the language itself.
While taking the course I learned a lot more about the community that I lived in than I imagined I would have. I decided to do my service in an Elementary school, San Martin Gwinn in the town of San Martin where they have the dual emersion program. In the program that I attended was the YMCA after school. It did not only give me the grasp of how the students learn Spanish as their second language, but it also let me interact with the parents. I think what attracted me to this program was how they are teaching children at such a young age to learn a second language It comes to show that the parents understand how important it is for their children to be bilingual.
While in the program I helped the students with their homework. It left me astonished as to how the students were able to understand the language not only on how to speak it but also the why it is said a certain way. My job was not only to help them with their homework, but we also did outdoor activities. While playing with them outside I tried to maintain Spanish in all the activities, the majority of my students were in the dual emersion program and the ones that were not were learning Spanish while in the YMCA program. The time that I did my service there was not a lot of Spanish speakers which lead to many of the students in the program to leave home with unfinished homework, since the other leaders were not able to assist them.
In the Y we did not only interact with the students but also with the parents. Many of the parents were hispanics and worked in agriculture. They all needed the program that the school offers, since they all work late hours and are not able to pick them up early. The YMCA tried to maintain a tie with the parents and the leaders in the program. They do so buy creating events that would let us interact with the parents, this lead to the parents being able to open up to us and tell us their problems.
