Span 325: Hispanic Cinema
Course Discription:
This course will examine the multiple ways that Hispanic and Brazilian filmmakers have seen Hispanic world, its people, religious beliefs and cultures for more than a century. This course provides the student with a range of perspectives on cultural developments in Spain, Brazil, Latin America and the Caribbean from the colonial to the modern period, using critical and literary texts as well as films. Taught in English
Course Narrative:
I took this course in my senior year Spring 2020 as an elective. The course is a dream come true being able to watch movies for homework and in class. The movies watched in the course were movies I personally would not pick to watch but they turned out to be amazing and interesting movies. The historical context of the movies made the films much more intersting. After the films we would have class discussion where we would talk about the movie and answer comprehension questions. A movie that I found interesting based the the historical context was Even in The Rain directed by Iicíar Bollaín, who did an amazing job in creating two prespectives in the film, the conquest of Christopher Columbus and the privatization of water showing us the conflict that it brought to the film. We were also assigned to present a film ourselves in groups. My group presented the film Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo Del Toro.
