MLO 3
Major Learning Outcome 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
MLO 3 Literary and Cultural KnowledgeStudents develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
The first course I took that gave me a lot of knowledge about the culture of Latin America was Span 306. In this course I learned not more about how the spaniards arrived to Las Americas. Growing up I did not have much knowledge about the history behind Latin America and after taking this course I believe that I got a handful. In class we had group and class discussion based and the assigned readings. This helped me out a lot since there were a lot of helpful questions that helped me understand better the readings we had. We also had a presentation where we had to present a country in Latin America and had to talk a little more about the country we got. We learned not only the history but also the traditions they have in different parts of Latin America. In this course it was the first time I learned about the Malinche, I had no idea before who she was or had even heard the name before.
Another course that I took in my two years at CSUMB that fit under this MLO was Span 330. This course has to be one of my favorites. In this course we read and discussed the testimonies in Latin America. Once again I was unaware of this testimonies. We read testimonies from slaves in Latin America to disappearance in Mexico. I believe that the stories that we read were very touching and shocking but they are testimonies that need to be told in order to keep history from reacting itself. A testimony that left me in shock was La noche de Tlatelolco and Ayotzinapa. The reason being is because I am Mexican and these stories were never told to me. This course influenced me to my Capstone project.
